Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the eighth anniversary of the date the federal minimum wage increased to $7.25 an hour:
“Ten years ago, the Democratic Congress raised the federal minimum wage and made strong progress on behalf of hard-working families. But for the last eight years, hard-working men and women earning federal minimum wage have been stuck, while the cost of living surges to unsustainable heights for Americans across our nation.
“Democrats know that our economy works best when it works for everyone, not just the wealthy and privileged few. A livable wage affirms the bedrock idea of fairness in our nation – that hard work deserves a living wage – and lays the foundation for strong economic growth that expands opportunities for every American. When families have more money to spend, we strengthen consumer demand, create more good-paying jobs and grow our economy.
“Congress should be tireless in ensuring that hard-working Americans get the better wages they deserve. While Republicans refuse to lift a finger to strengthen the middle class and those working to get there, Democrats are offering A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future.”
