Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement, marking the 81st anniversary of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s signing of the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935:

“Eighty-one years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law and transformed the economic security of hard-working Americans. Whether in retirement, disability, or the loss of a relative, generations of Americans have relied on Social Security’s bedrock guarantee.

“Yet time and again, House Republicans have proposed reckless policies to privatize Social Security, cut benefits, and saddle seniors with the costs. We cannot afford to squander the sacred guarantee that has long protected hard-working Americans’ retirements and independence. With Social Security facing new challenges, we must work together to protect Social Security for future generations.

“Social Security is vital to a Stronger America. House Democrats believe we must strengthen and expand Social Security for those who have earned their benefits through a lifetime of hard work – not undermine it. As we mark this anniversary, we renew our commitment to ensuring Social Security remains for future generations. Republicans should work with Democrats to protect and expand this lifeline for millions of American families.”
