Washington, D.C. â€" Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas:

"Fifty years ago today, nine young African Americans quietly but defiantly displayed their moral courage by simply entering a schoolhouse door in Little Rock, Arkansas.

"In that moment, the Little Rock Nine secured for themselves their constitutional right to an equal education. For the millions of others denied this right, they changed the course of history. The Little Rock Nine made plain to the world, on behalf of African Americans across our nation, that they would not bend in the face of discrimination or be denied their full share of the American dream.

"Today, as the House of Representatives commemorates the bravery of the Little Rock Nine, we also rededicate ourselves to their cause. We must find the courage they found in themselves as young Americans who demanded that our nation fulfill its promise of equality. We must walk in the path of the Little Rock Nine as we continue to confront the last remaining corners of discrimination and achieve true justice and equality for all Americans."
