Washington, D.C – Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi offered these remarks at a media stakeout. Below are the Speaker-designate’s remarks:
Q: Are you close to a deal to avoid a shutdown?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. Well, we are not supporting what they proposed which is a billion dollar slush fund for the President to implement his immigration policies. What I said, what we put forward, what we brought to the White House before: the six bills plus a CR or seven bills under a CR.
Q: Can you speak behind the microphone for a moment?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. Senator Schumer – Leader Schumer and I have said that we cannot accept the offer they made of a billion dollar slush fund for the President to implement his very wrong immigration policies, so that won’t happen.
Q: What’s a way out of this?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. We’ve said before, very clearly, that we could possibly come together around a CR for all seven bills, better than that – six bills that have already passed the Senate committees and one bill that is a CR for Homeland Security. Six and one or all seven under a CR.
Q: Leader Pelosi, do you take it as a good sign that the White House appears to be backing off its $5 billion demand?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. Yes, but the billion as the slush fund in addition to the money that would be in the bill this year – is not acceptable.
Q: What kind of communication needs happen now? Do you need to talk to the White House? Does the White House need to reach out to you?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. We’ll just see. I think that the White House has backed off the wall and that terminology but what they might want to do with that billion dollars is problematic.
Q: How do you see an idea of reprogramming if they try to do a reprogramming of money maybe under MilCon/VA without Congressional blessing?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. Well they have to have Congressional blessing for most reprogramming but right now what they offered, we have not accepted. I don’t know what the path might be out but it might be a CR. A shorter term CR.
Q: Is what happened at the border, is that having any more impact in these negotiations and money?
Speaker-designate Pelosi. Well what’s happening at the border is shameful and goes against everything we stand for as a country and some of you have heard me say. I quoted Ronald Reagan more than any other President in the course of the campaign. Ronald Reagan in his last speech to Americans as President of the United States talked about the Statue of Liberty and what a beacon of hope it is to the world.
What it means to Americans to see that statue that welcomed their ancestors and what it means to other people coming in. And basically he said, Ronald Reagan did, that our preeminence – America’s preeminence in the world, springs from every new generation of immigrants who comes to our country.
If we fail to recognize that, we will fail to be preeminent in the world. We cannot close the door, he said.
You should see it, Ronald Reagan’s last speech. That’s who we are as a country. That’s not who we are – our values are not reflected in what is happening on the border. What the slush fund could do is more of the same as is what is happening on the border.
