Upholding Reproductive Rights
Fighting for Our Most Cherished Rights
On Wednesday, Senate Republicans lined up in lockstep behind Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump to vote to rip away the Constitutional right to health freedom from American women across the nation. While Democrats are fighting to enshrine Roe v. Wade into law, Republicans remain fully committed to punishing and controlling women's most personal health decisions.
As last week's draft ruling made clear, the Supreme Court is poised to strike down Roe: a long-held and cherished goal of a radical Republican Party. Meanwhile, right-wing forces in Congress and across the country have mobilized around a dangerous and extremist agenda, seeking to criminalize not only abortion but also many other basic forms of reproductive care, including in vitro fertilization and post-miscarriage care. Make no mistake: once long-standing precedent and privacy rights are eviscerated by the Court, these same forces intend to wage an all-out assault on more of our rights – including access to contraception and marriage equality.
In this fight, the rights of women – and of all Americans – are on the line. And Democrats will never relent in defending our fundamental freedoms.
Robust Assistance for Ukraine
As Putin desperately accelerates his brutality in Ukraine, the House passed the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act – bipartisan, bicameral legislation delivering more than $40 billion to help Ukraine, including military aid, support for the Ukrainian economy and humanitarian assistance to address the worldwide hunger crisis stemming from Putin's invasion. This robust assistance will be pivotal in helping Ukraine defend not only its nation but also democracy for the world.
During our visit to Kyiv, our Congressional delegation heard directly from President Zelenskyy about what is needed on the ground right now to support the Ukrainian people in their righteous fight. Time is of the essence – and we cannot afford to wait. With this aid package, America sends a resounding message to the world of our unwavering determination to stand with the courageous people of Ukraine until victory is won.
Congress and the Biden Administration, together with our allies and partners, are committed to standing with the people of Ukraine as they courageously defend themselves and their nation against Putin's horrific aggression.
Strengthening Benefits for Federal Firefighters
This week, the House passed the Federal Firefighters Fairness Act to strengthen these brave first responders' access to workers' compensation benefits after contracting cancer or other illnesses from doing their job. This bipartisan legislation will remove unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles and help ensure that these benefits cover the full range of occupational hazards faced by the nation's 15,000 federal firefighters.
Every day, these public servants put themselves in harm's way to save lives and protect communities in California and across the country. When they pay the price for our safety through exposure to heat and toxins, America has a responsibility to provide them with the support they need.
