Protecting Our Economy For The People
Averting Economic Disaster
The Democratic Congress has once again acted to uphold its duty to ensure the full faith and credit of the United States, as the Senate addressed the issue of the debt ceiling, following the House's action last week.
In doing so, the Democratic Congress stopped Republicans from cynically driving our country into its first-ever debt default, which would have meant economic catastrophe for American families. With this legislation, Congress took action to:
- Protect six million jobs, as Americans continue to return to work in the wake of the pandemic.
- Keep $15 trillion in wealth in American households, from retirement accounts to college savings and more.
- Ensure that Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries continue to receive their benefits, Servicemembers keep getting paychecks and veterans continue to receive the services they need.
The Transformative Nature of Build Back Better
During his visit with House Democrats last week, President Biden affirmed that Democrats remain united in the commitment to create jobs, cut taxes and lower costs — and to do so in a way that makes the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share — through the Build Back Better agenda.
Build Back Better is transformative for jobs, children, health care, women and the climate. The initiatives in the legislation:
- Bring us closer to reaching universal health coverage in America, which is a moral, health and economic imperative.
- Support American families and women, with the Biden Child Tax Credit, child care, home health care, paid family and medical leave, universal pre-K, workforce development and more.
- Prioritize the health of children and the creation of jobs by addressing the climate crisis, lowering emissions and advancing the clean energy economy of the future, advancing the priority of environmental justice, educating a workforce for the future and advancing housing initiatives that are resilient and green.
Every day brings us closer to passing both the Build Back Better Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill — For The People!
Indigenous Peoples' Day
This upcoming Monday, Indigenous Peoples' Day, will offer an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate the extraordinary contributions that Native Americans have made to our country. In the face of long-standing injustice, generations of Native communities have strengthened and enriched our nation through political activism, military service, community leadership and more – pushing our nation to live up to its founding promise.
To honor the rights of indigenous peoples across the country, we must not only address the wrongs of our history – but work directly in partnership with Native communities to build a fairer future for all.
