Passing Key Wins For The People
Keeping the Government Open
Today, House Democrats passed a continuing resolution to keep the federal government open and working For The People, while advancing many of our nation's pressing priorities:
- $12.3 billion to power the fight for freedom in Ukraine, including new security, economic and humanitarian assistance
- $4.5 billion in relief for California, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, Florida, Alaska and other communities hit by natural disasters
- $1 billion for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program: helping families pay their energy bills as we enter the winter months
- $20 million to address the water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi: an emergency that poses a direct threat to the health and well-being of Mississippi families
- Enabling FEMA to access an additional $18.9 billion through its Disaster Relief Fund
Shamefully, House Republicans overwhelmingly opposed this must-pass legislation: voting against relief to victims of natural disasters, against responding to the water crisis and against critical funding for Ukraine – while voting for a devastating government shutdown. This is just further proof that extreme MAGA Republicans always put their own politics ahead of people's lives. The American people see that the contrast in priorities is crystal clear: Democrats are For The People, while Republicans are For Their Power.

Never Forget
On September 11th, our nation watched in horror as unfathomable acts of terror unfolded on our soil. House Democrats have worked relentlessly over the years to honor our solemn promise to the families scarred by that dark day, passing the Zadroga Act to ensure they could receive help from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, and the Never Forget the Heroes Act to permanently authorize those benefits.
Today, House Democrats took further action, passing the Fairness for 9/11 Families Act to correct an outrageous injustice. For years, 9/11 survivors, spouses and dependents were refused access to another key resource – the United States Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund – even as more distant relatives received compensation. After retaking the Majority, Democrats ended this unconscionable disparity. And with today's legislation, we voted to deliver the $2.7 billion that these families were wrongfully denied.
No amount of money can replace those who were stolen away, nor restore the memories and moments that could have been. But with this legislation, we further ease two decades of anguish and renew our sacred promise to Never Forget.
Expanded VA Eligibility
Our nation is blessed by the courage and dedication of our Servicemembers – and it is our sacred duty to honor their sacrifice. Just as the military leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they come home. That's why the Congress enacted the Honoring our PACT Act, the largest expansion of access to VA care and benefits in decades. Starting tomorrow, you may now file for VA benefits if you:
- were discharged or released from active service between September 11, 2001, and October 1, 2013, and served in combat operations after the Persian Gulf War
- or were in combat against hostile force after November 11, 1998
