Fighting for Women’s Reproductive Rights

Pelosi Update

Protecting the Principles of Roe v. Wade

This monstrous draft decision is a sweeping and severe restriction of Americans' rights. With it, Trump, McConnell and Republicans in Congress have assaulted privacy, precedent and the Constitution.

Make no mistake: by striking down Roe v. Wade, the Court would pave the way for Republicans to obliterate even more of our freedoms. This draft ruling offers a dangerous blueprint for future assaults on some of our most cherished rights, which are rooted in the long-held constitutional right to privacy. By eviscerating women's fundamental freedom to full reproductive care, radical Republican-appointed Justices are poised to inflict unthinkable suffering on tens of millions of families across our country, especially in communities of color and low-income communities. Democrats believe that every woman everywhere has the fundamental human right to reproductive care; her health decisions, including whether or not to terminate a pregnancy, belong to her.

In brazenly ignoring 50 years of its own precedent, the United States Constitution and the will of the American people, this draft ruling would seriously erode the legitimacy of the Supreme Court in the eyes of the American people. Upholding the rule of law and maintaining the faith of the people require that the Court allow Roe to remain the law of the land.

If instead the Court chooses to terminate Roe, Democrats will not relent in fighting back against the dire threat posed to women's health, safety and well-being. Following the draconian SB 8 policy enacted in Texas, the House passed the codification of Roe v. Wade — and Democrats will never relent until reproductive rights are enshrined into law.

Our Commitment to NATO and Ukraine

Last week, our Congressional Delegation traveled to Kyiv and Warsaw to send an unmistakable and resounding message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine and the NATO alliance.

In Kyiv, we had the solemn opportunity and extraordinary honor of meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top Ukrainian officials in Kyiv. In our meeting, President Zelenskyy thanked the United States for the substantial assistance that we have already provided and then conveyed the clear need for continued security, economic and humanitarian assistance. This aid is required to address the devastating human toll taken on the Ukrainian people by Putin's diabolic invasion – and our delegation proudly delivered the message that additional American support is on the way, as we work to transform President Biden's strong funding request into a legislative package.

In Warsaw, our Congressional delegation was honored to meet with President Andrzej Duda and express our thanks for the generosity and hospitality extended by the people of Poland to the people of Ukraine. We discussed the centrality of the U.S.-Poland partnership in delivering security, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, as well as the importance of bolstering the NATO alliance to counter Putin's aggression. In our many meetings in Poland including with the Speaker of Parliament, our Members expressed America's deep gratitude to the Polish government and Polish people for opening their hearts and homes to Ukrainian refugees, and we reaffirmed our nation's pledge to continue supporting Poland's humanitarian efforts.

Throughout this trip, those we met with were grateful to our Members for the knowledge, experience and commitment they brought to the challenges we face. I am proud that the Members of our delegation served as strong representatives of America's commitment to the NATO alliance and to Ukraine. Our delegation returned to Washington further informed, deeply inspired and ready to do what is needed to help the Ukrainian people as they defend democracy for their nation and for the world.

Employment Authorization Document Extensions

Under a new policy announced by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, many immigrants with recently expired or soon-to-expire work permits who have been unable to work due to processing backlogs will be able to continue working with those documents for up to a year and a half after they expire. Certain applicants awaiting renewal of their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) may be eligible for an automatic extension of up to 540 days past the expiration date of their previous EAD card; this will extend 360 days beyond the initial 180 day extension for qualifying applicants. You can learn more about your eligibility and how these extensions will work at this link. Congresswoman Pelosi is accepting applications for the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Naval Academy.

A constituent and their partner contacted my office to request expedited processing on an application to receive permission to adopt a child from abroad. As a result of our inquiry, their request and subsequent application were approved — and the constituents are now able to adopt a child from overseas.
