Fighting for Democracy in Ukraine & Around the World
Welcoming the Ukrainian Prime Minister
Yesterday, I had the great honor of welcoming Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal of Ukraine to the United States Capitol. On behalf of the Congress, I expressed our immense admiration and respect for the courage of the Ukrainian people as they defend democracy in the face of Russia's unprovoked aggression.
The Congress is continuing to work alongside the Biden Administration and our allies to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its atrocities and its unprovoked war. The United States Congress has continued to take action to support Ukraine:
- delivering $13.6 billion in security, economic and humanitarian assistance
- punishing Russia with severe sanctions that have choked off its economy
- banning the import of Russian energy products
- revoking permanent normal trade relations with Russia
- passing the Ukraine War Crimes Act, an important step toward bringing Russian perpetrators of war crimes to justice
This week, President Biden took further action, announcing a new streamlined process to welcome Ukrainian refugees to the United States, as well as delivering a new round of military and economic aid to Ukraine. And soon we will pass further assistance for Ukraine following the President's upcoming request.
The Congress is unified and unwavering in our support for the people of Ukraine. We are in awe of their courage, their commitment to democracy, and their love of country. Let us continue to pray for the Ukrainian people as we carry on our work to advance the cause of justice and peace.
Celebrating Earth Day
For more than half a century, Earth Day has offered an opportunity to recognize the beauty and fragility of our natural environment. Each generation inherits a sacred obligation to care for the glory of God's creation — and throughout our history, Americans have come together in service of that responsibility: whether protecting our nation's natural wonders through the National Park System or preserving clean air to breathe and clean water to drink through the Environmental Protection Agency.
Now, President Biden and Congressional Democrats are carrying on that proud tradition as we pursue a bold and essential environmental agenda. At last year's United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, the world came together to set visionary new goals for our collective fight against the climate crisis. Shortly after, House Democrats proudly passed landmark legislation to deliver the largest-ever federal climate investment, lower families' energy costs and build a stronger, more sustainable economy. Moreover, with our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Congress took further action to advance environmental justice for all — delivering historic funding to help get the lead out of our children's drinking water, expand sustainable transportation and clean up legacy pollution disproportionately harming communities of color.
Americans born today will live to see the next century, and the decisions we make now will determine whether they inherit a clean, healthy planet. This Earth Day, let us renew our resolve to secure for our children and grandchildren the bright future that they deserve.
Holiday Wishes
Spring has sprung, ushering in the season of reflection, renewal and resilience. This year, we mark the glory of Easter, Passover and Ramadan with particular solemnity in the face of tragedy and suffering in our nation and the world. Our nation will soon mark one million lives lost to the COVID-19 pandemic: a heart-wrenching, once-unthinkable milestone. Congress and the Country mourn with every family who has lost a loved one.
But this year, our nation is on the mend. With vaccines and therapeutics, we are making progress in our battle against the virus and can again be with family during this hopeful season. At the same time, millions of Americans are back safely to work or learning at school. As we continue this strong recovery, the trauma and loss of the last two years weigh on our hearts. May we use this season of holy days to continue to make progress toward healing, with a special emphasis on improving mental health.
During these holidays, we find hope in the indomitable spirit and unwavering goodness of the American people: who, throughout our nation's history, have shown that together we can solve any challenge, defeat any threat, overcome any adversity. May these sacred holidays renew our inspiration to vanquish anguish and despair, deliver For The People, and build a brighter future for all of our children.
