Building Back Better For The People

August 30, 2021
Pelosi Update

The Build Back Better Act
Under President Biden's leadership, House Democrats passed legislation paving the way for the Build Back Better Act, a once-in-a-century opportunity to deliver more jobs, cut taxes and lower health care costs, while making the wealthiest and big corporations pay their fair share of taxes. The Build Back Better Plan will deliver transformative, life-changing benefits for working families across the nation.

This package includes funding for:

  • Child care
  • Home health care
  • Paid family and medical leave
  • Free universal pre-K
  • The Biden Child Tax Credit
  • Workforce development
  • Expanding Medicare benefits
  • Addressing the climate crisis

This plan will ensure the US can not only compete in, but lead the world in clean energy technologies. It delivers one of the largest tax cuts for American families ever, making a transformative difference for all Americans by securing initiatives that enjoy a broad and bipartisan level of public support throughout the country.

Resources and Support for Those in Afghanistan
The United States House of Representatives strongly condemns the heinous terrorist attack outside Kabul airport. We mourn the loss of every innocent life taken, and we join every American in heartbreak over the deaths of the servicemembers killed. As we pray for the lives lost, the many injured and their families, Congress and the Country are grateful to our military, diplomatic and intelligence communities for their courage and patriotism. Read my full statement condemning the attack here.

Over the past week my office has been contacted by many constituents regarding family members and loved ones in Afghanistan. Our caseworkers in San Francisco are working hard to help individuals who want to relocate to the United States during these unfortunate times.

San Franciscans with Afghanistan repatriation or Special Immigrant Visa needs, please call my San Francisco office at (415) 556-4862 to be connected with a caseworker. If you are unsure of what options are available to you or your family, visit the Department of State's website to view the types of inquiries that can be made for U.S. Citizens, legal permanent residents, non-US citizens, and Special Immigrant Visa applicants.

Commemorating Women's Equality Day on the 101st anniversary of women winning the right to vote, Congresswoman Pelosi joined Mayor London Breed, City Administrator Carmen Chu, elected officials and community leaders as they held their ballots and encouraged women to vote in every election.

The House Passes The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
This week, the House of Representatives passed HR 4, The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to restore the power of the Voting Rights Act to protect the right to vote. State lawmakers have introduced over 400 voter suppression bills in 49 states in the 2021 legislative session alone. And at least 18 states enacted 30 laws that restrict access to the ballot, with many more on the way. The laws suppress the vote, as they make mail voting and early voting more difficult, reduce polling place availability, unleash a flurry of faulty voter purges and increase barriers to the vote for Americans with disabilities, among other blatant suppression tactics. By passing this legislation, we live up to the powerful legacy of this bill's late namesake, Congressman Lewis: a titan of the Civil Rights Movement and a courageous champion for voting rights.

Any diminishment of the Voting Rights Act is a diminishment of our democracy. Our right to vote must never be compromised. As we pass H.R. 4, the House remains committed to passing H.R. 1/S. 1, the For The People Act, which would help secure our democracy: stopping the partisan anti-democratic assault on our democracy from voter suppression, banning the scourge of partisan gerrymandering, stemming the torrent of dark money flooding our elections and empowering small donors.
