Pelosi Statement Urging WHO to Extend Observer Status to Taiwan

May 16, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement ahead of the 77th World Health Assembly convening in Geneva:

“Ahead of the 77th World Health Assembly, I strongly encourage the WHO to reinstate observer status for Taiwan, which it held 2009 to 2016 with distinction.  Doing so will not only enable Taiwan’s meaningful participation in global health collaboration but also enable the world to benefit from Taiwan’s capabilities and expertise.

“Taiwan is a flourishing democracy, which has demonstrated exceptional governance in response to global challenges from security to COVID to clean energy.  It is cowardly that Beijing continues to seek to isolate Taiwan from the rest of the free world.”
