Pelosi Statement on the Sentencing of Joshua Wong

San Francisco — Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the Hong Kong court’s decision to sentence pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to 10 years in prison.

“A Hong Kong court’s decision to sentence Joshua Wong to a new 10-year prison term under Beijing’s so-called national security law is an appalling abuse of power. After nearly six years behind bars, Joshua was just two months from going home. Now he faces imprisonment until 2036.

“Joshua has stood with the people of Hong Kong in their struggle for freedom since he was a teenager. While the judge said the sentence was meant to deter others, it’s clear the example Joshua has set will outlast any prison sentence.

“The United States and the international community must demand Joshua’s immediate and unconditional release. Beijing is counting on Joshua and others imprisoned for defending Hong Kong’s freedoms to believe no one cares enough to speak out for them. We will never forget Joshua Wong, Jimmy Lai or their fellow political prisoners, and we will keep speaking out until they are free.”
