Pelosi Statement on Passing of Norman Lear
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of television writer and progressive champion Norman Lear:
“Today, our nation mourns the loss of the legendary Norman Lear: a decorated veteran, a patriotic champion of our civil liberties and a towering titan of American culture.
“After dropping out of college and enlisting in the Air Force, Norman bravely flew 52 combat missions in the European theater to help fight fascism during World War II. When he returned home, he dared to dream of a world where diversity was not merely tolerated but celebrated – and he worked relentlessly to achieve that powerful vision. Norman was the mastermind behind many of television’s most iconic shows, including All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Maude and The Jeffersons. Using his commanding platform and trademark wit, he spoke truth to power with groundbreaking scripts and unforgettable characters that challenged our nation to grapple with taboo topics of power, privilege and prejudice.
“Norman’s impact was not simply confined to the writer’s room. Since his youth, he fought against antisemitism – and as the founder of People for the American Way, he defended free speech, the right to vote and the guardrails between church and state. Norman’s patriotism shone through when he purchased an original copy of the Declaration of Independence and sent it around the country and into communities, so all could bear witness to and celebrate our founding document.
“Over his long and storied career, Norman broke down barriers between communities and inspired generations of Americans with his magnificent artistry. May it be a comfort to his wife Lyn, his children Ellen, Kate, Maggie, Ben, Madeline and Brianna, his four grandchildren and the entire Lear family that so many mourn their loss and pray for them during this sad time.”
