Pelosi Statement on Passing of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor

December 1, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor:

“Today, America mourns the loss of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor: a trailblazing public servant, an icon for working mothers and an inspiration to women across the country and around the world.  Her passing is a tremendous loss for our nation.

“Justice O’Connor earned her place in history as the first woman ever to sit on the Supreme Court, where she was always an independent and influential voice.  Beyond shattering a glass ceiling, her service on the bench reflected our nation’s highest ideals: courage, integrity, patriotism and justice.  At the same time, she was insistent on not being the last – mentoring so many women in law, including our beloved Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“Justice O’Connor’s commitment to her family was legendary.  As a mother of three young boys, she proved to the world that working women can both excel in their profession and care for their children.  Even while serving in the State Senate, she always made sure her family could share homecooked meals.  And Americans were in awe of her strength to step down from the Court to be the caregiver for her late husband, John Joy O’Connor, during his battle with Alzheimer’s.  Their devotion to each other was a joy to behold.

“Last year, the House was proud to pass legislation to bring a statue of Justice O’Connor to the United States Capitol.  In doing so, we ensure that all who visit our Temple of Democracy will feel her eternal presence – and our children will learn about and be inspired by her towering legacy.  May it be a source of comfort to her sons, Scott, Brian and Jay, her grandchildren, and all of her loved ones that so many across our country are praying for them during this sad time.”
