May 10, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the passing of renowned mathematician and philanthropist Jim Simons:

“Jim Simons was an extraordinary mathematical mind and impactful philanthropist, who devoted his life to expanding our understanding of the world around us and solving our most complex challenges.  His sad passing is a tremendous loss for science, for America and for the world.

“Jim’s vision was always for the future.  He fueled trailblazing scientific research through his and Marilyn’s Simons Foundation and founded Math for America to nurture the next generation of mathematicians.  Through his support for his alma mater, University of California, Berkeley, and universities in New York and across the country, he helped ensure our country remains a global leader in research and innovation.  And through his generous support of progressive causes, he has helped widen pathways to opportunity and build a brighter future for all.

“Jim’s immense gifts to science and education will continue to be felt by Americans for generations to come.  May it be a comfort to his wife, Marilyn, his children Liz, Nat and Audrey, and all those who loved him that his many friends in the Congress and countless Americans across the nation mourn their loss and pray for them at this sad time.”
