Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement opposing the Republican Class Action Bill, which would weaken citizens' rights to seek redress from powerful interests and major corporations. The House just passed the bill by a mostly party-line vote of 220 to 201:
"Today, Republicans are championing big corporations with legislation aimed at eroding class actions, an indispensable tool for citizens to hold powerful interests and big corporations accountable for their misdeeds. The legislation also includes unconscionable provisions to impede compensation and violate the privacy of victims – many of whom are veterans – of asbestos-related illnesses and mesothelioma.
"From fighting to strip health care away from Americans to scheming to create new barriers for Americans seeking remedies in our civil justice system, this Republican Congress keeps working to stack the deck for the rich against hard-working Americans. With this bill, Republicans are siding with Goliath against David by helping the wealthy and powerful divide and conquer their victims. The American people deserve a government that works for them and stands with them as they fight for fair remedies in the face of corporations' immense money and resources.
"As President Trump and this Republican Congress keep stripping Americans of the tools and resources they need to create safer communities for their families, House Democrats are standing strong to build a better America for all, not just the wealthy few."
