Washington D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Women’s History Month:

“During Women’s History Month, we salute the generations of extraordinary women who refused to sit on the sidelines of history.  One hundred years ago, following decades of activism, women were still fighting for their long-denied fundamental right to be heard at the ballot box.  After the landmark achievement of the passage of the 19th Amendment, millions of women have continued to march in the footsteps of the suffragists in order to pursue further key rights for America’s women, including the right to equal pay, the right to equal access to educational opportunities, and the right to equal access to opportunities in the workplace.

“Today, the progress forged by generations of American women stands as testament to their indomitable spirit, affirming this vital truth: that when women succeed, America succeeds.  Through generations of unwavering persistence, women have broken barriers, shattered stereotypes and defeated discrimination in order to try to achieve the equality, freedom and opportunity that is the promise of our nation.

“Nevertheless, our work is far from complete.  Millions of women across the country are standing up every day to show their power and demand the rights and respect they are owed.  This month, as we honor the achievements of remarkable, trailblazing American women, we must rise to meet this moment and recommit ourselves to building a future of opportunity and prosperity for our daughters, our granddaughters and all Americans.”
