San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in commemoration of Women's Equality Day, which celebrates the ratification of the 19th Amendment:
"Women's Equality Day celebrates an American victory – extending voting rights to America's mothers, sisters, and daughters. By ratifying the 19th amendment 94 years ago, we strengthened our democracy and created a more just society.
"Today is a day to mark the progress our nation has made toward living up to its foundational values. However, it is also a day to renew our commitment to finish the job. Ninety-four years after women gained the right to vote, women on average still earn only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. In 1967, only 27 percent of America's mothers were working outside the home; today it is 64 percent; and yet too many of America's workplaces still resemble the ‘Mad Men' era. We need to fix that. There is no better way to increase economic growth and reignite the American dream than expanding economic opportunity and security for women and their families – by taking such steps as ensuring equal pay for equal work, providing paid sick leave, and expanding affordable child care.
"We know the fundamental truth that when women succeeds, America succeeds. Ensuring that women can succeed will ensure a brighter future and a more prosperous society for all Americans."
