Washington, D.C.—Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the Administration’s announcement of travel restrictions and other action to withdraw financial support for the Ugandan police and armed forces in response to the Uganda’s hateful Anti-Homosexuality Act:
“Today’s announcement by the Administration sends a stern signal to the Ugandan government: the United States will not tolerate the vile persecution of LGBT Ugandans.
“The Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Act represents breathtaking ignorance, injustice, and cruelty. Such laws have no place in the community of nations, and the government of Uganda should understand that their acts of oppression will only bring increased isolation and reduced economic investment.
“Our nation will continue to stand against assaults on the basic human rights of LGBT persons in Uganda and everywhere else governments legalize hate over love.”
