Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after the weekly initial unemployment claims report showed that nearly 3 million more Americans filed for unemployment last week, bringing the eight-week total to nearly 36 million Americans:
“The coronavirus didn’t pause for the 3 million more Americans who lost their jobs last week and desperately need more aid. It isn’t pausing for the thousands of Americans who are being infected and dying each week because we still do not have the testing and contact tracing we need.
“The Heroes Act delivers the timely and desperately-needed response that this crisis requires: funding a science-based path to opening the economy with testing, tracing and treatment, honoring our heroes with robust funding for state, local, tribal and territorial entities and hazard pay and putting more money in the pockets of workers and families.
“Lives are on the line, and Members of the House and Senate must work together to pass The Heroes Act and deliver the relief that families and workers urgently need.”
