Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Governor Ralph Northam signed legislation expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, providing health coverage to as many as 400,000 Virginians:
"Hundreds of thousands more Virginians will now have access to affordable health coverage, thanks to the strong leadership of Governor Ralph Northam, Virginia Democrats and countless courageous advocates, providers and families who have boldly fought for their right to health care.
"Virginia's Medicaid expansion shows what is possible when lawmakers work to improve families' health care, instead of trying to destroy it. The strong progress in Virginia is a powerful rebuke to the GOP Congress and the Trump Administration that has worked relentlessly to dismantle Medicaid in order to hand massive tax breaks to billionaires.
"Since day one, Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration have stuck the American people with a raw deal on health care – fighting tooth and nail to repeal the Medicaid expansion throughout the country through their monstrous Trumpcare bill, hiking families' premiums with their constant cynical sabotage and pushing junk plans that do not cover even basic health care. Democrats will hold Republicans accountable for this cruel, devastating assault on families' health, and will keep fighting to give the American people A Better Deal by reducing premiums, improving coverage and lowering the surging cost of prescription drugs for every family."
