Pelosi Statement on Upcoming Trump Administration and Congressional Republican Meeting

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the White House announced a meeting between Trump Administration officials and Chairmen Gowdy and Nunes on the President's demand for an investigation of the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation:

"President Trump's demands for a wholly unwarranted investigation of the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation are a grave assault on the independence of law enforcement.

"His self-serving, cynical campaign to peddle conspiratorial fantasies demonstrates his blatant willingness to distort reality for his political purposes and his utter disregard for the rule of law.

"As the President's lawyer Rudy Giuliani admitted, Trump is exploiting the power of the presidency to gain access to information to benefit his defense against the growing Special Counsel investigation. Disturbingly, Congressional Republicans remain complicit in this sham.

"The meeting orchestrated by the White House with Congressional Republicans is fraught with issues and should not take place unless it is bipartisan.

"Speaker Ryan must demand that Congressional Republicans end their constant attempts to undermine our justice system and cover up the facts on the Trump-Russia scandal. Nothing short of our democracy is at stake."
