Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement on UN Human Rights Day, marking the 72nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948:
“Seventy-two years ago, the nations of the world came together to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, articulating the rights and ‘inherent dignity’ of every person. On UN Human Rights Day, we reaffirm our commitment to this universal ideal and to opposing the forces of oppression and inhumanity that challenge the conscience of the world.
“This year’s theme, ‘Recover Better,’ is a global call to action to combat the human rights challenges exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, which has devastated the health and security of vulnerable communities in America and around the world. As we look with hope to imminent vaccines, America must work with our global partners to ensure that equity is at the heart of our efforts to vaccinate and recover from this crisis. At the same time, we cannot turn away from the gross abuses of human rights inflicted on religious minorities, refugee communities and those fighting for the blessings of freedom and democracy.
“At this challenging time, we must not retreat from our sacred promise to defeat the coronavirus and to defend and promote human rights, both in the United States and everywhere.”
