Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement marking two years since the deadly mass shooting at the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas: "Two years ago, a brutal massacre against the Latino community in El Paso stole 23 beautiful souls, injured dozens more innocent people and shocked the nation. This hateful act left Americans horrified and heartbroken, and on this solemn day, two years later, we pray for El Paso and all communities torn apart by the plague of gun violence. "Drawing strength and resilience from survivors and loved ones across the nation, House Democrats will never relent in the fight to end the epidemic of gun violence and combat the evils of bigotry and hate. That is why we have now twice passed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to secure universal background checks and the Enhanced Background Checks Act to close the deadly Charleston loophole. As we work to enact these bills, we applaud the actions taken by the Biden-Harris Administration to end the epidemic, including by combating the proliferation of ‘ghost guns' and implementing extreme risk protection orders at the state level. "Too many families across the nation have been forced to endure the daily horrors of gun violence.
