San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Trump Administration issued a proposed rule that would allow states to sell short-term junk health plans that do not cover essential health benefits and can discriminate against Americans with pre-existing conditions:

"Again and again, the Trump Administration has raised Americans' health costs and tried to throw families back to the days of crushing medical bills and insurers discriminating against pre-existing conditions.

"Americans purchasing these shoddy, misleading short-term Trumpcare plans will be one diagnosis away from disaster, discovering they have been paying for coverage that may not cover basic care such as cancer treatment, preventative care or maternity care. Meanwhile, the Trump Administration's cynical action will drive up premiums for Americans with pre-existing conditions whose lives depend on quality affordable care.

"Republicans must stop cynically raising Americans' health costs, and work in good faith with Democrats to improve and update the Affordable Care Act to reduce health costs for everyone."
