Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced that a woman will be put on the $10 bill:
"The decision to add a woman to our paper money is exciting news for all Americans. This is a proud day and an important step forward for our nation in celebrating women's invaluable contributions to our democracy.
"It is especially fitting that the new bills will arrive in 2020, on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment that secured women's right to vote. They will remind us of the undeniable fact of our country: when women succeed, America succeeds. In the meantime, we must rededicate ourselves to finally closing the pay gap and ensuring that all America's women receive the respect of equal pay for equal work.
"The new bills may be worth ten dollars, but the recognition of women's leadership in our history is worth much, much more. I look forward to a lively debate about which of the many exceptional American women should be on the new ten."
