San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement in honor of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which occurs on November 20:
"On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor and remember all who were murdered simply because they were courageous enough to embrace their identity. We don't know all of their names – but we refuse to let inaccurate reporting render these brave transgender people invisible.
"We must shatter the unconscionable silence and unforgivable inaction that allow injustice against transgender people to endure. With LGBT Equality Caucus' new Transgender Equality Taskforce, we aim to right the wrongs that attempt to silence transgender Americans. This new taskforce will help end the epidemic of exclusion, violence, discrimination, and bigotry against transgender people that undermines our democracy. We must improve the underreporting of violence against transgender Americans and strive to make our communities safer for all people.
"Today and everyday, let us strive to create a more inclusive society. Our transgender loved ones, neighbors, co-workers, and friends deserve to be safe in their homes, at work, and in their communities. As we celebrate the lives of transgender people killed simply because of who they are, we must continue to take steps forward to ensure that all transgender Americans can live the American dream."
