Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding reports that the Chinese government will allow Chinese lawyer and human rights activist Chen Guangcheng and his family to study abroad at an American university.

“The reports that the Chinese government will accept Chen Guangcheng’s application to study at an American university is a welcome development. Secretary Clinton and the Obama Administration are to be commended for engaging the Chinese government at the highest levels to try to produce an outcome that honors the values of our nation.

“In the coming days, it is essential that the United States government take the appropriate steps to ensure that these understandings are properly implemented and that Mr. Chen and his family are safe.”
