Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the sixth anniversary of the date the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, which is tomorrow:

“Six years ago, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, and our nation took a giant step toward fulfilling the generations-long struggle to make health care a right, not a privilege, for all Americans. The success of the Affordable Care Act is undeniable: a milestone 20 million previously uninsured Americans have now gained health coverage thanks to this historic legislation.

“The Affordable Care Act continues to deliver on the promise of providing quality health care to children, women, workers and families across the country. Because of this landmark legislation, seniors have saved billions on their prescription drugs, the solvency of Medicare has been extended, and health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in over 50 years. Millions of Americans have been liberated from the burden of unaffordable premiums, devastating medical bills, and the fear of being denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. And no longer is being a woman considered a pre-existing condition.

“Six years later, it has never been more clear that the Affordable Care Act works. But with 63 votes and counting to repeal or dismantle the ACA, Republicans continue to work to reverse our progress and shatter the affordable health coverage of millions and millions of Americans. Republicans must wake up to the truth of ACA’s success, and join with Democrats to build on the monumental progress we have made toward a healthier, stronger America.”
