Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement on the retirement of Dr. James H. Billington, who served as the 13th Librarian of Congress:
"Dr. James Hadley Billington's unwavering commitment to scholarship helped steer the Library of Congress into the 21st century. For Dr. Billington, the pursuit of knowledge has been a life-long endeavor that is both integral to enriching our nation's democracy and engaging with people across the nation and around the world.
"Since 1987, Dr. Billington has been a steadfast champion of connecting our contemporary world with the knowledge of history needed to ensure a brighter future. Because Dr. Billington knows that the dynamism of our democracy rests on our ability to connect with others, he has been on the forefront of creative programs for our nation's premier library: expanding outreach and educational resources to researchers, historians, students, visitors and underserved groups.
"Dr. Billington has demonstrated outstanding leadership and has been a tremendous asset to the Congress and our country. We are grateful to Marjorie, their four children, and grandchildren for sharing this great man with the nation for 28 years. We wish Dr. Billington the best of luck as he enjoys retirement with his loving family."
