Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement regarding the release of hundreds of political prisoners in Burma:

"The release of political prisoners is good news for the future of democracy and human rights for the Burmese people. It has been reported that the release includes nearly all high profile political prisoners and many of the leading monks of the Saffron Revolution of 2007. It is my hope that this is an unconditional release, and it will pave the way to free and fair elections in the near future and the release of all remaining prisoners of conscience.

"Aung San Suu Kyi continues to make progress in her tireless efforts to bring change to Burma. She is truly an inspiration to freedom-loving people around the world.

"While significant challenges lie ahead on the road to democracy in Burma, the Obama Administration is to be commended for its diplomatic efforts. The decision to exchange ambassadors with Burma is an appropriate response to recent events."
