Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Nobel Committee announced that it would award this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee, and Tawakul Karman of Yemen:
“Today, three extraordinary leaders have been recognized not only for their achievements in securing the rights of women in their own countries, but for advancing the cause of peace, promoting core democratic values, and expanding opportunity for all people.
“Their actions are an example for young women and men worldwide – to lead with conviction, to pursue justice, to achieve equality, and to strengthen societies. They reaffirm a fundamental truth: there is nothing more wholesome than the participation of women in the political process.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to get to know President Sirleaf in recent years: to be inspired by her example, her persistence, her passion and perseverance, and her dedication to her people. She is a leader revered by her people, challenged by the difficulties in her country, and determined to make progress. She gives her fellow Liberians hope.
“To President Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, and Tawakul Karman, we offer our heartfelt congratulations. The world is a better, more peaceful place for your efforts.”
