Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to President Obama’s call on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform:

“Today, President Obama reaffirmed a fundamental truth about our country: We are, by and large, a nation of immigrants. For generations, America’s immigrant communities have enriched our culture, reinvigorated our economy, and defended the country that they call home. Now is the time to honor that heritage and ensure our future strength by passing common-sense and comprehensive immigration reform.

“With remarkable unity, leaders in government, business, labor, and in our faith communities have come together in support of comprehensive immigration reform that creates jobs, reduces our deficit, and grows our economy. That is why House Democrats introduced bipartisan legislation, co-sponsored by 185 House Democrats, that secures our borders, protects our workers, unites our families, and provides for an earned pathway to citizenship. The Senate has already passed bipartisan legislation that reflects these core principles and it’s time for House Republican leaders to give the American people a vote in the U.S House of Representatives.

“We cannot wait any longer to ensure that our country’s most basic values are reflected in the laws of our land. We must recognize that each generation of immigrants brings a determination, hope, and optimism that makes America more American. We must act now to pass comprehensive immigration reform, so every person who strives to build a better life on our shores can achieve the American dream.”
