Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of Walter Shorenstein:
"Walter Shorenstein was a proud San Franciscan, a great American and a dear friend. He was a man of extraordinary vision, leadership, and wisdom.
"Walter and his late wife Phyllis engaged in philanthropy and civic activism to build a better San Francisco and a better America. Their gifts to the Bay Area and the nation’s academic and cultural institutions have been legendary. For Giants fans, Walter was a leader in keeping our beloved baseball team in San Francisco.
"Above all, Walter was a family man; he dearly loved his wife Phyllis and his late daughter Joan, was devoted to his children Doug and Carole, and his grandchildren Sarah, Brandon, Sandra, Danielle, Wally, and Grace.
"Paul and I loved Walter and will miss his warm friendship and his great leadership. I hope it is a comfort to them to know that Walter Shorenstein is mourned and praised across the country and within our community."
