Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passing of Ted Sorensen, international lawyer, advocate, and former Special Counsel to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson:

"Today, I join the family, friends, and loved ones of Ted Sorensen in mourning the passing of a giant of a generation, a true progressive, and a great public servant. Nearly 50 years to the day after helping elect President Kennedy, Ted Sorensen leaves us a legacy of passionate advocacy for the causes of justice and peace, and for the advancement of America's greatest values of liberty, freedom, and equality for all.

"As a partner to a President, Ted Sorensen helped craft the words that inspired millions of Americans -- young and old -- to carry forward the torch of progress. As an aide to two Presidents and as a lawyer renowned around the world, he answered the call to do all he could for his country. His work drew parents and students and countless others to participate in our democracy, give back to our communities, and serve as our best ambassadors to the rest of the world. His life was a true profile in courage.

"I last saw Ted Sorensen when President Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal and where he was introduced as a man who 'gave us a window into the people and events that made history.' Simply by leading such an extraordinary life, Sorensen was one of those people who made history and shaped the events that defined an era.

"I hope it is a comfort to his wife, Gillian, and his children and grandchildren that so many share their grief at this time."
