Washington, D.C. â€" Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of Madale Watson:

"I extend my sympathies to the family and friends who today mourn the passing of Madale Long Watson, whose vision and leadership helped promote progressive policy and increased women's participation in California politics and government.

"I first met Madale in the mid-1970s, when we both served as officers in the California Democratic Party, and was proud to call her friend for over 30 years. With wit and wisdom, Madale challenged us with her idealism and knowledge of the political process, endearing herself to generations of Californians who knew her by her nickname: 'Mother.' Inspired by her passion for people, Mother Madale was a voice for civil rights and economic justice, serving as Chair of the California State Board of Registered Nursing, a Member of the Board of the California Public Employees Retirement System, and as a Democratic State Central Committee member for more than 50 years.

"I hope it is a comfort to her family and the many people who loved 'Mother' Madale Long Watson that so many people share their loss and are praying for them at this sad time."
