Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement on the passing of LeRoy King, San Francisco Redevelopment Commissioner:
"LeRoy King was a distinguished labor and civil rights leader whose passion for justice and commitment to equality improved the lives of working women and men in San Francisco and throughout the country. From inviting Dr. Martin L. King to speak in San Francisco in 1967 to casting my official vote for President Obama in 2008, LeRoy King was more than a witness to historic progress, he made history.
"During World War II, he served with courage and honor -- and dedicated his entire life to preserving and strengthening the great democracy he fought to protect. Even in his 80s, in the tradition of great American leaders, he was arrested for an act of civil disobedience on behalf of hotel and restaurant workers. Mr. King actively sought to create a world where others could live free of discrimination, bigotry or injustice.
"Whether in his fight for affordable, integrated housing or his dedication to preserving African American and Japanese American communities in the Bay Area, King laid a foundation for a more inclusive, more welcoming home for all Californians. Generations of Californians will continue to learn about this great man at sites throughout the city named in his honor, including the historic carousel in Yerba Buena Gardens. May it be a comfort to his family and friends that so many share their grief at this difficult time."
