Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement on the passing of Gwen Ifill, co-anchor and managing editor of the PBS NewsHour, who passed away today at age 61:

“Gwen Ifill was a legend. Her dignity and grace, intellect and insight set the standard in American media and public life. Gwen’s commitment to excellence – covering local news and presidential campaigns with unassailable professionalism and poise – inspired a new generation of journalists and encouraged many Americans to participate in civic life.

“One of five children of immigrant parents, Gwen dedicated her entire professional career to strengthening the democracy she loved. Every day, Gwen showcased the patriotism of America’s journalists – building a stronger America with their insistent pursuit of the truth. In covering presidential campaigns, reporting from the White House, moderating debates, and providing insight as a political analyst, Gwen’s voice provided the calm and clarity our country needed.

“Paul and I extend our thoughts and prayers to Gwen’s family. May it be a comfort to them and all who loved Gwen that so many join in mourning her passing at this difficult time.”
