Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Elouise Cobell

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader released the following statement today on the passing of Elouise Cobell, a longtime advocate for the rights of Native Americans:

“Elouise Cobell dedicated her life to improving the lives of others, to securing justice for her fellow Native Americans, and to strengthening the bonds between Indian Country and the U.S. government.

“She was an inspiration, a leader of passion, persistence, and perseverance, a champion of the rights of Native Americans, and a shining example of determination for all Americans. From the courtroom to her victory on behalf of hundreds of thousands of Native Americans, she fought to undo the wrongs the past and invest in a brighter future for Native American students and families.

“Americans of every background owe a debt of gratitude to Elouise Cobell for her years to advocacy and her battle for justice. I hope it is a comfort to her family, her friends, and all who knew her that so many share in their grief at this sad time.”
