Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of Dr. Edgar Wayburn:

"Dr. Edgar Wayburn accomplished as much on behalf of our planet -- God's beautiful creation -- as any human being in history. His lifetime commitment to protecting the environment and promoting human health has touched people on every corner of the earth.

"A physician, an educator, and a conservationist of the highest order, Dr. Wayburn's environmental successes began in Alaska, when he led a successful campaign to pass the largest public land bill in the history of the Congress. Today, more than 100 million acres of Alaska remain wild because of his advocacy.

"But his leadership is acutely felt in San Francisco, where his efforts helped create one of our nation's premier urban national parks: the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The redwoods there stand as if in tribute to Dr. Wayburn.

"With extraordinary wit and good humor, Dr. Wayburn ensured progress for all Americans. But Dr. Wayburn was devoted to his family above all: his beloved wife Peggy, who preceded him in death and his children. I hope it is a comfort to those who loved him that so many grieve their loss and are praying for them in this sad time."
