Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan, which falls on Sunday, March 11:
“Today, Members of Congress and all Americans join the families of Japan in marking a solemn anniversary – remembering the victims; recalling a tragedy of unimaginable proportions; rededicating ourselves to helping Japan continue to recover and rebuild.
“The horrifying images of one year ago – the pictures of destruction that emerged in the aftermath of a natural disaster and a nuclear catastrophe – remain seared into the memories of countless Americans and people worldwide. Yet, even more so, we all remain inspired by the resilience, perseverance, and unflinching spirit of the Japanese people, by their ability to look forward with hope when facing impossible odds, by their dedication to emerge from this tragedy stronger than ever.
“In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami last year, the United States provided assistance, support, and aid to our friends and allies in Japan; today, we offer the same commitment. We stand ready to keep doing all we can to assist the communities still bearing the brunt of the devastation, the families who lost homes, the people who lost loved ones. We offer our thoughts and prayers to all Japanese citizens, and pledge to maintain the strong partnership between our two nations.”
