Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today criticizing the inclusion in the House Majority's budget reconciliation bill of a controversial Republican proposal to split the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco.

â€Å"Today’s action is the latest in a series of Republican attacks on an independent judiciary, and the latest in financial irresponsibility by the Majority. On the merits, there is no justification for the court splitting proposal. It is simply a partisan exercise to appease the radical right.

â€Å"The attempt to split the Ninth Circuit will come at tremendous cost to the American taxpayer. It does not have the support to pass both Houses of Congress, so House Majority Members are seeking to stifle debate and the democratic process by inserting a controversial measure into the expedited budget process.

â€Å"This proposal is simply unacceptable, and I will continue to oppose it.”
