San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 195,000 jobs and the unemployment rate remained at 7.6 percent in June. With 202,000 jobs added by private businesses, this marks the 40th consecutive month of private sector growth:

"Today's jobs report is a step in the right direction for our workers, our businesses, and our middle class. Now, we must act to put more people to work, expand our economy, and spur prosperity for all Americans.

"The best way for Congress to meet our responsibilities is for House Republicans to join Democrats in appointing budget conferees and negotiating a final budget agreement that eliminates the sequester, creates jobs, strengthens the middle class, and responsibly reduces the deficit. Yet more than six months into the 113th Congress, Republicans have refused to name conferees, failed to pass a single jobs bill, and rejected any reasonable solutions to grow our economy. Americans deserve better.

"It's time for congressional Republicans to abandon their partisan political games, discard their strategy of obstruction and delay, and reach across the aisle to address the core challenges of the American people. Democrats are ready to work with Republicans to enact a fair budget, create jobs, and build an economy that works for small businesses and the middle class."
