Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the introduction of the Child Care for Working Families Act, comprehensive child care and early learning legislation that will ensure that every child has access to high-quality early learning and child care that will not break the bank for their parents:

"Across America, too many families in too many communities are confronted with the soaring burden of rising child care costs and limited access to quality early learning opportunities. The Child Care for Working Families Act will make landmark progress for American families by lowering costs and increasing pay for hard-working men and women while empowering our children with learning at the earliest stages of life – helping parents earn and children learn.

"Affordable, quality child care and quality early education for all are the keys to unleashing to full potential of America's working families. Our bold legislation guarantees that no family under 150 percent of state median income will be forced to spend more than seven percent of their income on child care, because no family should be forced to decide between caring for their children and ensuring that they can put food on the table.

"Under the strong leadership of Chairman Bobby Scott, House Democrats will continue to champion solutions that close the zero-to-five gap for affordable, high-quality child care and preschool. We are proud to move forward to put children on the path to success tomorrow, and put parents on the path to bigger paychecks now, so that we can unleash the full economic power of all American families."
