Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the introduction of the 2020 Census Accountability and Accuracy Act by Rep. Carolyn Maloney, which prohibits the Secretary of Commerce from implementing any major operational design to the Decennial Census that have not been researched and tested for less than 3 years prior to census day:
"The Census is a pillar of our democracy, ensuring that all Americans are equally counted and represented. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney's 2020 Census Accountability and Accuracy Act will take urgently needed steps to ensure a strong, accurate and nonpartisan Census.
"All Americans should be deeply concerned about the Justice Department's request to add a citizenship question to the Census. This misguided proposal would instill fear and distrust in our communities, leading to further undercounting, under-representation and financial exclusion in traditionally undercounted communities. It is imperative that the Commerce Department reject this alarming proposal.
"Democrats will continue to work for a fair and accurate Census, and will reject any attempt by the Administration to compromise the integrity of this vital institution of our democracy."
