Pelosi Statement on the Fourth Anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement
Contact: Speaker’s Press Office,
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the fourth anniversary of the historic Paris Climate Agreement:
“For four years, the landmark Paris Climate Agreement has stood as a powerful commitment by the nations of the world to boldly tackle the existential threat posed by the climate crisis. Today, American leadership is as critical as ever to protect the people and places we love and ensure a healthy sustainable future for our children and grandchildren to grow and thrive.
“While the Trump Administration recklessly abandoned this historic agreement, House Democrats’ commitment to taking action on the climate crisis remains ironclad. That is the message we delivered to our global allies last month at the COP25 in Madrid, where our bicameral delegation reaffirmed, unequivocally, that ‘we are still in it.’ Since Day One, House Democrats have delivered on this commitment with bold action, holding over 100 hearings in the committees of jurisdiction and the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis; passing H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act to prevent the Administration from leaving the Paris Agreement and requiring an Administration plan to reduce pollution; passing dozens of bills with positive climate impacts; and investing boldly in a clean energy future that creates good-paying jobs and paves the way to 100 percent clean energy by 2050.
“The time for action is now. Failing to take decisive steps will have devastating consequences for our children and our future, and would betray our responsibility to safeguard our public health, our economy, our national security and our moral obligation to be good stewards of God’s creation. Guided by the vision and voices of leaders, advocates, entrepreneurs and inspiring young activists, House Democrats will continue to work with cities, states and our international partners to advance meaningful, innovative solutions as we call on Leader McConnell and the Administration to end their dangerous obstruction and join us to protect the planet we call home.”
