Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in the wake of the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, its second major earthquake in the past six months:

“The thoughts and prayers of all Members of Congress and all Americans rest with the people of New Zealand today, and the families and loved ones of those wounded, those missing and in need of rescue, and those who perished in this devastating earthquake.

“On this darkest day for an entire nation, we must remember that the longstanding partnership between our two countries reflects more than an alliance of two governments; it is a friendship between two peoples. And the United States stands ready to help New Zealand search for survivors, treat the injured, restore access to food, water, and power throughout Christchurch, recover and rebuild.

“As New Zealand confronts the aftermath of this tragedy, I hope it is a comfort that so many – here and around the world – have offered their support and assistance during this difficult time.”
