San Francisco â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist:

“On behalf of House Democrats, I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Chief Justice William Rehnquist.

“I respected Chief Justice Rehnquist’s intellect, his passion for the Supreme Court and its traditions, his leadership, and his administration of the judiciary. As Chief Justice, he was a strong advocate for an independent judiciary, particularly in response to recent threats to impeach judges for their judicial decisions and to strip federal courts of jurisdiction.

“It is with sadness and respect that I extend my sympathies to Chief Justice Rehnquist's family and friends. I hope it is a comfort that so many people are praying for them at this sad time.”
