San Francisco â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist:
â€Å"On behalf of House Democrats, I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
â€Å"I respected Chief Justice Rehnquist’s intellect, his passion for the Supreme Court and its traditions, his leadership, and his administration of the judiciary. As Chief Justice, he was a strong advocate for an independent judiciary, particularly in response to recent threats to impeach judges for their judicial decisions and to strip federal courts of jurisdiction.
â€Å"It is with sadness and respect that I extend my sympathies to Chief Justice Rehnquist's family and friends. I hope it is a comfort that so many people are praying for them at this sad time.â€Â
