Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Department of Labor released its April jobs report, showing 20.5 million jobs lost and the unemployment rate reached 14.7 percent:

"Our nation is in the midst of an historic health and economic crisis, and even this record-shattering April jobs report understates the suffering in our nation today. The dire job losses show the urgent need for a bold CARES 2 package that is equal to the crisis gripping the American people.

"Our CARES 2 package must protect the lives and the livelihoods of the American people and the life of our democracy. It must provide strong support for our heroes with robust state, local, territorial and tribal governments on the frontlines of this crisis who desperately need funds to pay the health care workers, police, fire, transportation, EMS, teachers and other vital workers who keep us safe and are in danger of losing their jobs. It must ensure further support for Americans who are losing their jobs and their health coverage.

"The answer to opening up our economy is science, science, science. Our CARES 2 package must commit critical resources to the testing, tracing and treatment we need in order to have a science-based path to safely reopen our country.

"With millions of Americans out of work and millions more suffering, we must act with courage, strength and urgency to provide the support that the American people need to protect their lives and livelihoods. As we work to take the next step, Democrats will always put families and workers first. We will never stop fighting until we have overcome this deadly threat For The People."
