Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the second anniversary of the historic Paris Climate Agreement:

“Two years ago, the nations of the world came together to take historic, far-reaching action to affirm our shared commitment to leave future generations with a planet that is healthy and sustainable.  Since then, every nation on the planet has accepted the challenge of limiting carbon pollution and embraced the goal of a clean energy future.

“Amid rising temperatures, surging seas and record floods, fires and storms, bold and ambitious global leadership is needed now more than ever.  Unfortunately, the Trump Administration has recklessly abandoned and undermined this shared responsibility by walking away from the agreement.  The White House’s dangerous decision to abdicate America’s leadership role in combatting the climate crisis also profoundly threatens our national security, economic security and the health of our families.  Republicans in Congress have helped the Trump Administration prioritize polluters over the public.

“Pope Francis wrote in his encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ that, ‘The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all.’  While Republicans sadly continue to ignore that message, Democrats are taking real, urgent action to protect the health and safety of future generations.  We will continue to join cities, states, innovators and entrepreneurs and the American people to honor our moral responsibility to preserve the beauty of God’s creation for our children and grandchildren.”
